It’s Official July 28, 2004
I’m officially an IVF patient now. Before I get to how the consult went, I just want to take a moment to say that Houston traffic sucks. It sucks even more when it’s pouring down rain. Anyway, my IVF consult went very well. We got to meet with the IVF coordinator, the RE, and the financial person. I thought surely they would think I was crazy for having my IVF binder all stocked up with records, questions, etc., but I heard several times, “Wow. You’re making my job so much easier.” I really liked our RE. She answered every one of my questions.
So here’s the plan:
- I need one more blood test that my OBGYN didn’t have me do previously- prolactin. I’ve already got an order for it, so I’ll get that done tomorrow at the lab that my insurance will cover, and then go through the whole pain in the ass process of getting the results sent to my RE.
- I have to call the IVF coordinator on cycle day 1 (or next business day) to get my IVF schedule. That should probably be Monday or thereabouts.
- On cycle day 3, I start birth control pills for three weeks. They gave me the pills today, so that’s one less thing to have to take care of.
- So, I guess we’re looking at retrieval and transfer in mid to late September. I won’t know for sure until I get my protocol.
Wow. It’s really happening. I’m really nervous but also excited. I know better than to get my hopes up too high. There’s a possibility that this won’t work for us, or at least the first time. But the way I look at it is that we actually have a CHANCE to get pregnant. For the last 2.5 plus years we’ve had a 0% chance of getting pregnant each month. Now, it could actually happen.

Glad to hear your appt. went well. Wishing IVF will work the first time and this hellish nightmare will end for you soon.
Does your insurance cover IUIs and IVFs?
Thanks everyone. Katie, our insurance does not cover IVF at all but covers 50% of IUIs. Unfortunately, that doesn’t help us any, because sperm retrieved directly from the epididymis can only be used with IVF w/ ICSI. So we’ll be paying 100% out of pocket. It’s a lot of money, but we’ve been saving for it for a while, since we knew it was a possibility.
Best of luck with the upcoming IVF!
