Now That’s a Big Bug August 14, 2005
I’m really not a fan of bugs. It’s too bad, because we’ve already become acquainted with quite a few since we moved here a week ago. Today, I took the kitties out on the balcony (one of their favorite activities) and discovered this guy.
That critter is pretty damn scary.
There’s not too much going on besides the bug escapades. The unpacking has slowly come to a standstill. We’re at that point where we just don’t know where to put stuff. Plus, I think my husband feels that we’ve gotten to a point where it’s good enough, so there’s just no motivation for him to help out with the rest.
My arm continues to be a lovely shade of black and blue from my blood draw an entire week ago. I never blogged about it since there was so much other stuff going on, but last Sunday’s blood draw was not fun. Since it was the weekend, the normal person wasn’t there, and the person filling in wasn’t as smooth. I gave her the arm with the big vein to make it as easy as possible, but I knew things weren’t going well when she had stuck me and then said, “Well, I should be getting something.” She fooled around with the needle while I winced, and then she somehow managed to go through my entire vein. Basically a vein blowout, if you will.
Now, IVF has toughened me up a bunch, but I used to be that person who had to lay down after blood draws in order to keep from passing out. Hell, I was the one who threw up all over the Camp Fire Girls leader’s house after having my finger pricked during a blood typing project. So when the nurse asked me to rub this huge, throbbing lump on my arm on Sunday, I about lost it. I managed to make it out of there and stay concious on the drive home, but I lost it when I got back home. Seriously, it was disgusting. At least it’s just another bruise to add to my collection now. The throbbing lump thing is what I couldn’t handle.
So, I guess there’s nothing too important going on if I’m blogging about bugs and bad blood draw experiences. I guess that’s ok, though. Sometimes boring isn’t too bad.

Ah, it’s a cicada! Our cats used to love to catch them, then bring them inside to chomp on them while they made horrible noises. Hope your cats don’t learn that trick!
Random fact: in Provence, they loooove cicadas, and use their image to decorate all sorts of things (tablecloths, napkins, glasses, etc.). I don’t get it.
oh holy cheesus, Amanda! First, that blood draw, I think I would have punched the phlebotemist in the fricking face if she did that, ouch!
And then that bug- it’s just unholy. Did your kitties go for it? My cats love to torture huge cicadas. And they make so much noise while dying, it’s awful. Love my kitties, but they can be brutal killers!
I am glad you seem to be calm, and I hope you have a wonderful u/s and uneventful 9 mos.!

Jen- OMG. If that thing was inside my house, I would lose it. I just don’t see the decorating sense in that.
Erica- Oh, no. My cats love bugs, but they didn’t go for that thing. Although, they may have just not seen it. I could just picture one of them trying to get at it. I would be one unhappy mama. And yes, denial=calm.
Holy crap, that is a gigantic cicada!!! Scary. Glad everything else is “boring” right now.
if only they weren’t so ugly! I miss that about not living where it’s warm the sound of summer.. you can eat them too if you want…
as for boring sometimes it beats the hell out of the alternative.
That’s not a bug, that’s a rodent! Uggghhh
That sucks you got a hematoma just before the big move……..damn.
Thinking of you a bunch and so very, very, very happy for you, my sweet.
Take care.
omg, I have never seen such a huge bug. that thing freaks me the fuck out and i’m just looking at it over the internet. remind me to never move to the south or places where they have this remnant from the age of the dinosaurs. where i live in california, we don’t even have mosquitos!
I think they have sort of cute faces. And they don’t bite or spit or sting. They just make a biiiiiiiig noise.
Much rather have a cicada than a hellish blood draw like the one you described.
Yikes. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bug that huge….and I live in Florida! I’ve no idea if we have cicadas here. If we do, I guess I’ve been lucky enough never to encounter one. We do have tons of lizards everywhere but that’s ok. They are cute :)
I’m like you when it comes to having blood drawn. Your experience reminds me of the time there was someone new at my clinic and, after the painful experience of her finally getting the needle in, she decided she wasn’t getting enough blood from that one and had to switch to my other arm (leaving me 2 enormous bruises).
WOW, that’s a big freaking bug. I hate bugs… But, my cat loves them. Don’t know if we have bugs like that is this part of the south. But I’ve seen lots of huge spiders lately.
Sorry about crappy blood drawl. Blown out veins are the worst. Hope it gets feeling better for you.
Enjoy the calmness too. I hope it stays that way for the next 9 months!
Oh man, that is one nasty cicada!
I thought I was a hardened bug-o-phobe after living in Florida my whole life and dealing with palmetto bugs. Then when we moved to Alabama for a brief 10 months, I met the unholy cicada–one of the most disgusting bugs I’ve ever seen. Even more gross? They shed their ’shell’ and you’ll see the empty shell looking just as creepy as if it were still in it, stuck on trees, etc. My condolences to you that you now know this line of grossness.
Sorry to hear about your arm. I had a bruise after my hospital stay that took 4 weeks to fade. And even now, 8 weeks later, I still have a very faint outline of it. It was horrible, and horribly tender.
That is one BFF (big fucking bug). Yeesh. Sorry about the vein blowout. Why is it that so few nurses and phlebotemists can get the job done without inflicting pain and or hideous bruises??
What a gross bug! I’m easily freaked out by bugs and that one is nasty. I don’t think I’d ever go outside if I were you. Boring is good, sometimes, you’re right!
Wow, that is a huge bug, but I guess if they’re harmless, I’d rather that than a hideous blood draw too!
omg! that is the hugest bugs I have ever seen. I would of died if one of those thing came across me!!
And the blood draw. As of today I have never had a problem..and if I do ..she better run..because I can punch!
