Moving Sucks August 3, 2006
I know I should be really good at this by now given the fact that this will be our umpteenth move. (I think it’s #10, but I lost count along the way.) I don’t think practice really helps much in this situation, though. It’s still not fun.
Our apartment is getting really crowded with boxes and we’re not even done with half of the packing. I have no idea where to put the rest of them. I guess moving into a house four times larger than this tiny place doesn’t seem like such a bad idea now.
Then there’s all the fun to be had dealing with utilities, mail, etc. I called the cable company today to inquire about new service at our house and got so frustrated after learning it would be about $140 just for installation (they charge per outlet and we have a bunch of outlets) that I told them I would call back next week (when hopefully they’ll have some kind of deal running).
I think I’m just throwing my hands in the air with our current mail situation. When we got the keys to the house after closing we were told to take our settlement papers to the post office where they would give us our mail box key. We made our way to the P.O. only to learn that they did not have our key and did not know when they would have it. Our name got added to a sizeable list of other people waiting for their keys. We’ll try again when we’re in Houston this weekend, but I’m not holding my breath.
On top of that, Dan found a note in our apartment complex mailbox this evening that some dimwit in the office had placed in there letting the post office know that we had moved out. Um, hello. We’re not moving for another week and a half, you morons. They have our notice and our August rent, so I don’t know how they could be confused. So now I have no clue where our mail is going. It was too late to go to the P.O. today to straighten it all out, so I’ll have to wait until Monday since we’re leaving early tomorrow morning to head over to Houston.
I know it will be soooo nice when we’re all settled in the house, but right now I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. It sure does help to bitch about it on my blog, though.

Moving does suck, big time! And that mail situation sounds like a nightmare. Actually, so does the cable situation. I hope you get it resolved before you move in because cable is, like, air. Essential to life.
Oh no, are you dealing with the evil Time Warner? If you can get by with DSL (I think there’s a super-fast version now), you might think about contacting AT&T, aka The Artist Formerly Known as SBC, and getting some price quotes on DSL/satellite TV/phone service package. I (who live in Houston) have one, it’s a good deal, satellite TV is great, AND all of the installation/repair folk will come out seven days a week. That’s right, I got my satellite TV (now with DVR as a default!) installed on a Sunday. Basic package covers TVs in two rooms. I do not and have never worked for SBC/AT&T/whatever, I swear, but never having to deal with the cable company again? Priceless.
Anyway, enough with the assvice – good luck with the move!
Oh, yes you are so right. Moving does suck. Rich says we will never move again. Ever. I hope he’s right. Anyway, just be sure to take it easy through this move and not let the stress get to you.
Wishing you a smoother time – can’t wait til you get to the other side of this move.

Oh yeah, moving sucks big time. Done it many many many times. I expect to do it at least one more time, but I really hope the next move is the very last. Or at least next to last.
And how come, when you want people to be helpful and put in a reminder notice to the post office after you’ve moved and your mail is still being delivered to the old place, they don’t, but when you’re still IN the old place, they happily post notes to anyone and everyone… *sigh* Good luck with the rest of the packing!
Moving once is too much for me, I can’t imagine moving as much as you have. The house looks wonderful though so I am sure it will be more than worth it!
Take care
Ugh, how moving sucks! After we bought our house (4th move in just over 4 years of marriage), I told J that I refused to move again for at least 5 years. And, as last time was the first of those moves for which we actually hired movers, that I’m never using a damned U-Haul again.
I hope that you’re done and settled quickly. And that you find your mail.
Moving sucks – big time!! Hang in there and remember that it will be worth it in the end. This will probably be your last move for a REALLY long time. Sit down, have a cup of decaf tea, take a deep breath, and smile — you have a beautiful new home!
I like moving in fact I love it, it’s just the packing and unpacking I can’t stand doing. Hope the mail/cable situation is sorted out quickly for you being tv’less is ok being net’less is just too horrible to contemplate.
Jamie has the right idea. But, after you finish the tea, you’d better start herding up all the small animals you’ll need to sacrifice to the cable company just to get them to come out.
Wonderful with the great p-word news. all good!
Wonderful house. Super wonderful. Wow!
I hate moving too. We are looking for a new place too.
Good luck with everything, the moving, the mail and the baby!
Take care!
