I Think Someone Switched Babies on Me June 28, 2007

Adam took two naps today totaling 3.5 hours of sleep time. Incredible.

I thought it had backfired on us when I went to nurse him to sleep tonight, though. He nursed for 40 minutes and then was done. Sounds good except for one problem. He was wide awake. I changed his diaper and then tried to get him to nurse again so I could get him to nurse himself to sleep. Nothing doing. So, I wrapped him up in the Miracle Blanket, put him down in his crib, turned up the music a tad, and left the room.

I stood on the other side of the door just knowing that he was going to start fussing any minute. What did that crazy little goober do? He talked to himself for a while, kicked around for a bit, and then went to sleep on his own. I think I’m still in shock.

Wow! That’s wonderful–what a great thing if it could happen every night!

So don’t be surprised if we do meet up this weekend if the baby you take home at the end of the day looks, um, slightly older and maybe more like my son than yours? (My kid–very cute, but a truly terrible sleeper.)

How wonderful! I hope this new sleep routine continues. It sounds like more sleep was just what he needed. We find the same thing still happens with P at age 3 1/2. When he’s not getting enough sleep (like when we’re on vacation and he’s up late a lot), he sleeps less and sleeps more fitfully. A day or two of early bedtimes and he’s usually back to his normal routine of getting enough sleep. But kids are awfully good at pretending they don’t need the sleep!

Here’s one that always knocks my socks off…some rare times the lil ones who scream the moment you THINK of putting them down, want you to leave them the eff alone…it shocks me. Normally I’m desperate for free arms (or not needing my wrap) and then she shocks me with wanting to be down.

Course my wee one wants that ONLY when I want to snuggle lol

I’m glad that you are having some luck with the sleep thing. If nursing to sleep works use it! Obviously Adam can sleep on his own too, so why fight over the nursing to sleep when you don’t have to??

I’m sure you’ve knocked on wood a few times after saying that, but I’ll knock on some over here for you as well. :)

It’s great that you now know he’s capable of this type of thing!

Hi Amanda: Have you read “Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child” by Dr. Mark Weissbluth? I literally could not have got through parenthood without it. Btw I now have another little girl, 4 mos old. Good luck with the sleep thing.

You have a beautiful son! Congratulations on the sleep victory. May this be the beginning of many restful nights. I second the recommendation for HSHHC. Seems to be the only sleep book I’ve read based on actual research.
