Sometimes It’s Good to be Unremarkable October 15, 2007

We got Adam’s MRI results a little while ago. I happen to think he’s a pretty remarkable little guy, but according to the report he has an unremarkable brain. His eyes appeared normal as well. I am so incredibly thankful to be able to exhale.

Of course it wouldn’t be us if the report ended there. Apparently he has a “lack of normal T1 shortening in the posterior pituitary gland” which can be a marker for a disease called Diabetes insipidus, not to be confused with Diabetes mellitus, the blood sugar one. I haven’t had the chance to consult Dr. Google much yet, but it has to do with the kidneys inability to concentrate urine. Obviously we have a lot more questions than answers right now about this, and we don’t even know what the chances of him having it are. Adam has his rescheduled 9 month checkup on Friday, so I’ll definitely be discussing it with his pediatrician.

We’re so relieved to know that there’s not a tumor causing Adam’s nystagmus. We’re waiting to find out when the pediatric ophthalmologist wants to see us back so we can figure out where to go from here, but it’s just such great news to cross off tumor from the list of possibilities.

Now if Adam could just recover from the post MRI effects. He’s either having a reaction to something they gave him on Friday or he managed to pick up a virus while at the hospital. Either way, he’s been having a rough go of things, and we’re going through diapers like you wouldn’t believe. Hopefully whatever this is runs its course soon so he can get back to feeling better again.

I am so glad to see everything turned out ok! He is a beautiful boy!

That is so weird. The medical mystery column of the NY Times had an article about this type of diabetes yesterday. They made it sound like, once diagnosed, it’s easily solved with a pill, but I don’t know if that’s the whole story.

So happy all the big stuff came back normal!

sorry, it was a nose spray, not a pill. even easier!

Yay, I was so hoping you’d get the results today! Being a mom is such tough work, no one ever told us about all the stuff that goes along with loving someone so much. I hope everything else turns out ok and I can’t wait to see more pictures!

Oh what a relief - I was thinking about you guys today, hoping you’d get results sooner rather than later. Hopefully the marker is just that and he doesn’t have the diabetes. I hope he’s much better soon!

So glad to hear that adam’s brain is all good. How awful this has been for you.

such happy news that the mri came back NORMAL. isn’t that the nicest word to hear when medical things are concerned?

8. Jen - October 15, 2007

Oh, A, I’m so very very glad that everything was gloriously normal on the MRI. I was hoping that it would be the end of the medical issues, but as cat said, the article in the Times yesterday about that type of diabetes seemed to make it seem like a quite manageable condition–hopefully, though, it’s another false alarm.

Glad there was no tumor! I’ve been thinking about you guys.

Hooray for unremarkable!! Glad to hear that the results were good.

Hoping that “marker” is another unremarkable thing.

15. lisa - October 16, 2007

Yay, so glad to hear this! Hoping everything else turns out to be normal too.

I’m so excited everything was plain ole boring! :) WTG Adam! I’ll keep him in my prayers about the DI. http://www.diabetesinsipidus.org/ I didn’t know you could diagnose babies with it so early! Most of what I remember involves the excessive peeing. Poor little man. I’ll check back with your blog to see how he’s doing!

Oh, and I’ve seen several babies with nystagmus and it turned out to be nothing. One was a severe micropreemie and he just was so overstimulated and couldn’t handle things, but therapy helped him. And I have an adult friend with it and she didn’t even know till we were in nursing school and someone pointed it out! She’s just fine. I’m glad you’re getting him checked out so you can be sure. :)

Sometimes it is really good to be unremarkable!

18. Larisa - October 18, 2007

Well, here’s to an unremarkable brain. Not sure about the other thing; hoping it’s either nothing or something that’s not a big deal. And hoping they figure out what to do about the nystagmus.

Thank Cheesus, so happy there is no tumor. I’ve been thinking about you guys.

Hope Adam gets feeling better Amanda.
