Lucky Duck April 8, 2008

I have to admit that sometimes I get down dealing with Adam’s GI issues. It’s hard. Plus, this diet is rather depressing at times.

When I hear a friend happily recounting all of the things that her toddler ate when they went out for dinner the night before, it’s hard for me not to think about the fact that my toddler only has two foods and that I haven’t been able to go out to eat since before Adam was born.

And then I give myself a good smack and realize what I’ve just said to myself. Hey, my toddler has two foods! That’s HUGE for us. And so what about not being able to go out to eat. I will be able to again someday. Maybe not anytime soon, but someday. And the reason I can’t eat at restaurants is because I’m doing this for my son. Needless to say, he’s more important.

Our reality when it comes to the food department is just different than most. We’re celebrating that fact that our soon to be 15 month old can now eat both applesauce and barley cereal. Sure it took forever to get there, and there’s a growing list of things we’ve tried that he hasn’t been able to tolerate, but this is real progress for us. I just have to remember not to compare.

Reflection is a good thing. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the IVF days. I’m not exactly sure why, but in doing so I’ve been able to remind myself how incredibly lucky we are. Sure, we’ve got issues to deal with, but we’re doing it with our son. Our son! I still have to pinch myself sometimes.

So, things are good even if they’re tough sometimes. I’m one lucky woman to be living the life I am.

It’s great that you’re able to look at it positively, and hooray for Adam for having 2 foods finally! Still, though, it’s very tough on you and I promise that we’re here if you just need a chance to vent about it!

Two foods! Hooray!!

And, you know you’re lucky. We know you’re lucky. But that doesn’t mean it’s still not hard and that you can never complain about it.

You are lucky, but it’s too bad you have to deal with the food issues.

Take care

Good for you for maintaing perspective. As is everything in life, everything is relative.

Go Adam and yeah for two foods Amanda! He’ll get there. You’ll have the rest of your life to go out to dinner once things are resolved, but I know it must suck at the moment.
Don’t compare, I catch myself doing it daily and every child is totally different. And yes, you are so very lucky, so keep pinching honey. I find myself pinching a lot lately and thinking back to where I was 2 or 3 years ago, trench hell….
Bryce did not start really sleeping all night long until about two weeks ago and when I would see parents post about “their parenting skills” is what got their child to sleep all night long it would literally piss me off. Just like Adam’s GI issues, Bryce has GERD and GERD children take more time to get to the all night sleeping point due to the reflux.
Good to see you post, I was getting worried!
Hoping we’ll see a three food post soon.

Yay for barley and applesauce and breastmilk makes three doesn’t it? Amanda you’re doing a great job, this has been incredibly hard and I’m in awe of the patient and vigilent way you’ve gone about isolating your diet to monitor his etc. I hope Adam can add another food soon (are all other pureed fruits out of the question, I’m sorry if you canvassed that earlier). Those early IVF days were indeed difficult and you got through them. This too will pass.

Welcome back! Yeah, Adam! 2 foods… slowly but surely.

Its a good idea the not comparing thing… and one that all moms should adhere to (easier said than done tho!)

Can’t wait for pics of the little man.

amanda, it is tough for you. Yes, it’s all worth it and yes, at the same time you are lucky, but it’s still very very tough. I hope you’re managing to maintain your weight now and looking after yourself as well as adam.

But two foods? Yaay!
